What is Zakah

Zakat, one of the five pillars of Islam, holds the power to transform lives and end extreme poverty. It is a religious obligation and a responsibility towards the less fortunate in society. The Quran reminds us of giving to those in need: “…and those in whose wealth there is a recognized right, for the needy and deprived” (Qur’an 70:24-25).

Zakat, one of the fundamental pillars of Islam, holds immense transformative power. It is not just an obligation but an opportunity to profoundly impact and alleviate extreme poverty. Mottingham & Eltham Islamic Centre recognizes this significance and is dedicated to ensuring that your Zakat donations are used effectively to assist the most vulnerable individuals in need.

      Understanding Nisab and Zakat Calculation:

      Nisab: The Minimum Threshold

        • The Nisab refers to the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before becoming liable to pay Zakat.
        • It is calculated based on the value of gold and silver.
        • As of the current valuation (31 August 2023), the Nisab thresholds stand at £4,302.52 for gold and £381.37 for silver.

      Zakat Calculation:

        • Zakat should amount to 2.5% of your total zakatable wealth.
        • Example: If your total assets, after deducting any debts owed, amount to £10,000, your Zakat payment would be £250.

      The Impact of Zakat:

      Distribution with Utmost Care:

        • At Mottingham & Eltham Islamic Centre, we prioritize distributing Zakat to those who meet the criteria for receiving it.
        • Special attention is given to vulnerable individuals, including children, those affected by war, disease, and climate disasters.

      Transforming Lives:

        • Your Zakat donations fund crucial work in disaster and war zones, supporting communities affected by drought and famine in East Africa and conflict in Syria.
        • Sustainable livelihood programs are established to address the challenges posed by climate change.
        • Vulnerable orphans and families worldwide receive assistance, enabling them to lead better lives.
